The domain name “Google” probably goes against most of the “rules” of picking good domain names. Or does it? It’s not very long or hard to spell. Easy to remember. And only made up of 4 different letters. But come on, would you have ever thought of the domain name Google? Probably not.
What does it mean? What does it refer to? As a brand, we can all now say that it was a good decision because it worked out. Yet, what if someone out there thought of it first for something completely different…just out of the blue?
I believe it would have been just as successful a website as it is now with the same dedication that the website founders/developers had in bringing that search engine to the public. It could’ve probably been called “Toogle” and been just as well. It’s MY assessment, so keep that in mind.
Major websites have been developed since the introduction of the world wide web; some of them have been successful and some of them Not So Much. Some of them have been successful in the past and over time have become less relevant, mainly, due to societal and technological changes.
To take it a step further, Google has become one of the current drivers of what is considered a “Good” domain name, in a way. They would recommend that domain names be less than a certain number of characters because of all the feedback they get from web browsers.
So, on the one hand, as long as it’s memorable and easy to spell, you’re pretty much good to go. When I’m searching for domain names for a certain niche, sometimes using that lingo can be helpful if it’s easier to spell. I’ve changed my mind a few times while selecting domain names for certain projects. I substituted a few words for others that were more commonly confusing to spell. If it’s too long you’ll find out sooner or later and get another domain name and transfer your site there and test it out. Most people prefer CLICKING, so it may become less of an issue.
The message here is that if you believe in your concept or brand go for it and take action. It’s the best way to find out and you’ll pick up a new experience in the process.
Give it some thought. However, there’s a saying from when I used to play pool; “Think long, you think wrong.” I wouldn’t make that my world view, yet in some cases, the more we think, the longer it takes to DO something. I guess there just has to be some balance.

If I don’t know how to do it, we can always look it up like my dad always said when I was a lot younger.
